Did Parade Magazine Just Slur Homeschoolers?

June 2nd, 2008 · 2 Comments

The Parade Magazine Intelligence Report on June 1 offered a brief item about the California appellate court decision denying that California parents have a right to homeschool. Parade quoted only one source in the piece, and that source suggested that homeschoolers aren’t much concerned with a good education:

“If upheld, the California ruling will send shock waves nationwide,” says Richard Kahlenberg, the author of a number of books on education. He says the case “pits those who believe parental rights are paramount against those who place a premium on well-educated citizens.”

Accompanying the item is a poll offering readers the opportunity to vote on whether homeschooling parents should have teaching credentials.

Well, you know we just can’t stand the thought of a well-educated citizenry. Who would want one of those? It is one of those ridiculous statements you only have to think about for half a minute to realize its flaws.

But I doubt people flipping through Parade gave it that much thought.

Since 1986 it has worked for us . Four of our 6 have entered college by age 17. One is in a ministry college and has traveled to Africa, Canada, and the Amazon. One was a manager of a store by age 20, is youth pastor and knows how to do everything from building a house to putting a motor in your car. He also plays drums at church and is part of the ministry team. We have our last to go. She is ll and does 9 hours of dance, plus voice and violin each week. Helps with the sound equipment on Sunday mornings and is joining the puppet team. Because we homeschooled we were always able to travel. All 6 have been to almost all 48 continental states, Mexico, Bahamas, Canada, Grand Turk and more.
One has been to Europe twice. I feel they had an excellent education at home and are people often wanted by others as professionals, helpers, mentors and friends.
